Palliser Community Connections Project

Moose Jaw Public Library, in partnership with Community Connections is offering a series of programs designed to familiarize immigrants with their community and the community with our immigrants.

The programs in the Palliser Community Connections Project at Moose Jaw Public Library include:

1)      Women Creating Art, which pairs Canadian women with immigrant women, one on one in a social setting for six weeks commencing January 12th to create jewelry under the guidance of artist Anna MacDonald.

2)      Immigrant Testimonials will occur on Febrary 2nd, and feature two speakers who are recent immigrants: Mohammed Mohammed from Iraq and Hinda Diriye from Somalia.

3)      Saskatchewan author Bill Barry will present on February 15th on the history of immigration to Saskatchewan and how place names were impacted by that immigration.

4)   A tour of the Tunnels of Moose Jaw will occur on February 16th for the women who are participating in Women Creating Art. New immigrants will learn about previous waves of immigration, helping them to understand the history of immigration to Moose Jaw and give their own experience context in that history, helping to ground them in their new community

5)      A Supper and Study event will occur on February 29th.  Immigrant youth will mix & mingle with youth from the community, enjoy food and drink, and maybe, just maybe, together do some homework!

6)     A Grand Finale will take place on March 19th.  Gerry Stonechild will begin the event with an aboriginal prayer. It will provide an opportunity for the participants of all the programs to come together.  The jewelry created by the immigrant women will be on display, Aboriginal, homeland and Canadian cuisine will form a potluck. Music, small presentations, and photos of Canada and other countries will create an atmosphere of celebration!
